But as the city grew the rivers were built over and became underground waterway systems.
Before the city of Toronto was there, the land had many streams and rivers. The Algonquian tribes of Canada believed hairy, humanoid creatures lived in these.
The creatures the Algonquin believed in were called Memegwesi and were described as child-sized and hairy with a whiney voice
.
The Toronto Tunnel Monster was seen in 1978 by a 51 year old man. The man went looking for his lost cat where he came across a waterway opening.
When he shone his torch into the dark opening he saw a creature which he described as being “long and thin, almost like a monkey, three ft long, large teeth, weighing maybe 30lbs with slate-grey fur”.
He also described the creature having large red, slanted eyes.
After a few seconds passed, the creature hissed “go away” and scurried off into the tunnel.
The Toronto Tunnel Monster is thought to be one of these creatures the Algonquin tribes spoke of who were driven underground.
